Chevalier d'épopée, veneur impie converti à la vue d'un cerf prodigieux, pourvoyeur de gibier et guérisseur de la rage, fondateur mythique de la Cité de Liège dont il fut le "premier" évêque... Saint Hubert occupe une place de premier plan dans l'imaginaire collectif. Sa légende renvoie à une grande peur collective, celle de rage, et à une passion controversée, la chasse. Elle s'est forgée au Moyen Âge, à Liège et en forêt d'Ardenne. Elle s'est par la suite propagée par la parole, l'écrit, l'image surtout, dans de nombreux pays. Si bien que le cerf crucifère, l'emblème de son héros, fait aujourd'hui partie du bestiaire universel. Le présent ouvrage s'est donné pour objectif - et c'est une première - de raconter l'histoire de cette saga hagiographique et de son extraordinaire diffusion en Europe d'abord, puis dans le monde, du VIIIe siècle à nos jours.
